Meet Leanne Newton

Production Planner

My name is Leanne and I have worked at SMD since I left school roughly 12 years now starting off as a PMO moving to stores for roughly 5 years then moved to operations as a Production Planner after my Maternity leave. I have a 3 year old son called Harry. You will 100% hear me before you see me.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

Recognising achievements made by women and being respected the same as everyone else around you.

How does SMD nurture female talent?

SMD contributed towards my degree in Business Management which has benefited me in to being a better and more productive version of myself. SMD also provide opportunities for development and progression. I have also been given the opportunity to visit and help our Shanghai offices in China.

How have you found SMD’s support in your role?

SMD were very supportive when I was on maternity leave, they had KIT (Keeping In Touch) days as well as inviting me to work parties etc even though I wasn’t in the office. They also sent me some flowers when I gave birth😊

Once returning from maternity leave – My son harry is 3 years old and sometimes it can be hard juggling work with a sick child. The chance to work from home if needed really helps me manage my time.

What is your experience like of working in a traditionally male-dominated industry?

I enjoy it – Most engineering companies are male-dominated but I don’t know any different as I have been here since I left school. I am quite often the only female in the room, but you just need to not be afraid to speak your mind and put you opinion across as well as challenge other people’s views and expect to have your views challenged.

Do you have any advice for women aspiring to work in subsea robotics/engineering?

Believe in yourself and enjoy the process – don’t be afraid to take chances. For me, when you plan all the production to build an amazing piece of equipment it makes me realise how much I have enjoyed working in this sector and look forward to a long future in this industry.

What are 3 words you’d use to describe SMD?

Rewarding
Supportive
Fun

SMD also provide opportunities for development and progression. I have also been given the opportunity to visit and help our Shanghai offices in China.
