Meet Laurie Thomson

Marketing and Communications Manager

I am the Marketing and Communications Manager at SMD. And although my background isn’t technical, I’ve had to develop my technical understanding of our products over the years.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

Its about raising the profile of women in the workplace. It’s about taking the opportunity to help other women by raising each-other up and supporting each-other, and the idea that we can do exactly that.

How does SMD nurture female talent?

SMD nurtures talent regardless of gender by giving us opportunities to learn by doing – taking on responsibility at early stages in our careers, and by providing opportunities do develop through external training, including funded training and by giving us time out to take part in training and development activities.

How have you found SMD’s support in your role?

I’ve got two small children and a third on the way. SMD flexible working policy has been absolutely critical in enabling me to have the work life balance that I need to be able to do both of my jobs (Marketer and Mum) effectively.

What is your experience like of working in a traditionally male-dominated industry?

I’m a non-technical female in a very male dominated, engineering heavy environment. I’ve never found this to be a problem at SMD. My peers appreciate that I have skills and experience that can compliment theirs. We work together as a team, leveraging everyone’s different skillsets to work towards a common goal.

Do you have any advice for women aspiring to work in subsea robotics/engineering?

Don’t let the idea that it’s a male dominated industry put you off.

What are 3 words you’d use to describe SMD?

Supportive, Innovative and Flexible

SMD nurtures talent regardless of gender by giving us opportunities to learn by doing - taking on responsibility at early stages in our careers.
