OCTOBER 2022 – shallow Water Trencher

Shallow Water Trencher

The compact Shallow Water Trencher has been specifically engineered to be agile and nimble for speedy road transportation. It is compact and modular in its design making it suitable for road transportation, launching from a small barge/workboat, quickly and easily upgradable, and suited to a shore approach.

Our team in Shanghai conducted extensive research in intertidal zones during construction of offshore wind farms in China where water depths are extremely shallow – between zero to 10 metres – to ensure the trencher was fit for purpose and would perform well in both China and Europe.

Paul Davison, MD at SMD UK, explained: “In 2017 we started to conduct thorough research from our Shanghai operation on what equipment was required for the emerging renewable scene in China. It was a priority to have an easy to use, cost effective trencher that worked in shallow depths. However, we realised that we didn’t have to limit the machine to the Chinese market – it was 100% needed in Europe as well.

“We’ve ended up creating a nimble piece of equipment that works at extremely low water depths which is great in China but, because it is a very compact trencher, it’s road transportable which is what our European customers wanted.

“Like a lot of our products it’s modular in its design meaning users can easily upgrade or downgrade, depending on the job at hand. It is also fantastic for a shore approach because of how small and lightweight it is which again is another great feature for European customers. For example, you can use a low vessel impact crane to launch it rather than needing a more heavy duty launch and recovery system helping keep costs to a minimum.”

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that the system is rated to 200msw and it’s modular design means it can quickly be upgraded to a subsea jetting pump configuration; giving it the ability to work away from the vessel and in deeper waters.
