Robotics Engineer – Innovation Team

SMD has major growth plans that will be enabled through the expansion of its undersea robotics range and support services.  SMD Innovation is charged with developing or adapting new technologies to support these ambitions.

Next-generation subsea robotics will rely on increased intelligence and electrification of sub-components. This role will focus on increasing intelligence and electrification of sub-components, with specific emphasis on software and advanced sensing for robotic movement and placement to help us drive forward the developments set to shape the future of subsea technology.

The Role

You will be solving technical problems with novel solutions in the field of robotics, contributing towards the complete robotic and software development process, from conception to deployment.

The role includes maintaining, modifying, and testing changes to previously developed systems whilst collaborating on technical discussions and decisions. You will be integrating sensors and low-level modules into higher-level autonomy systems, testing and evaluating solutions both in simulation and real-world environments.

For this role, you will require a degree in Electrical Engineering or Software Engineering (or equivalent), and have experience and knowledge in the following:

  • C/C++
  • ROS2
  • Embedded Linux
  • Debugging issues across interconnected systems
  • Understanding and working with code written by other people
  • Interfacing to sensors and systems
  • Understanding of low-level hardware control and communication standards (serial protocols, RS232, RS485, I2C, Modbus, Ethernet, etc)

Experience in the following would also be beneficial:

  • Producing robust and reliable industrialised systems
  • Using ROS2 in industrial and/or safety-critical settings
  • Realtime operating systems
  • Interfacing with PLCs
  • Subsea robotics

We are looking for someone with a positive and proactive approach to their role with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. We’re also keen for a candidate who can work well both independently and as part of a team to problem solve.

Effective communication both written and verbal is essential for this role, as is the confidence to work both theoretically and practically to create new solutions and see them through testing.
