Machine Learning Engineer – Innovation Team

SMD has major growth plans that will be enabled through the expansion of its undersea robotics range and support services.  SMD Innovation is charged with developing or adapting new technologies to support these ambitions.

Next-generation subsea robotics will rely on increased intelligence and electrification of sub-components. We are looking for a talented engineer to focus on software development and advanced sensing for robotic movement and placement, to help us drive forward the innovations that are set to shape the future of subsea technology.

The Role

You will be responsible for the design, development, and deployment of machine learning models in the marine subsea environment for computer vision, autonomy, and Edge ML applications.

You will have the opportunity to work on advancing cutting-edge tech in AI, Machine Learning, Computer Vision and Autonomy, building ML models that meet performance, reliability, and scalability expectations.

The role will include understanding and incorporating appropriate AI modules of capability, preparing data for ML processing, optimising CI/CD pipelines for efficient ML model deployment and testing, and monitoring deployed models for performance – proposing improvements to meet development goals.

For this role, you will require a degree in Electrical Engineering or Software Engineering (or equivalent), a strong understanding of AI and ML, and have experience and knowledge in the following:

  • C/C++
  • ROS2
  • Embedded Linux
  • Debugging issues across interconnected systems
  • Data modelling and evaluation, including predictive modelling
  • Data visualisation
  • Understanding and working with code written by other people
  • Image, object, and pattern recognition techniques

Skills in the following would be beneficial but not essential:

  • Producing robust and reliable industrialised systems
  • Using machine learning in industrial and/or safety-critical settings
  • Realtime operating systems
  • Subsea robotics
  • AI and deep learning techniques

We are looking for someone with a positive and proactive approach to their role with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. Plus, we’re looking for a candidate who can work well both independently and as part of a team to problem solve.

Effective communication, both written and verbal, is essential for this role, as is the confidence to work both theoretically and practically to create new solutions and see them through testing,
