Tell us a little bit about you and your job
I’m Scott, I started SMD at the age of 18 in 2019 as an electrical apprentice. Since then, I have completed a HNC in electrical engineering and finished my apprenticeship, I have also very recently been promoted to Commissiong tech.
Tell us about your education story and how you came to work at SMD
I started Sunderland Engineering Training Association (SETA) in 2018 as soon as I finished secondary school, This is where I started my apprenticeship which I personally believe was the best path to take for myself. I have always wanted to work at SMD from a young age touring the workshops with my father who has been here nearly 30 years.
What is the best part about working at SMD?
SMD is full of opportunities to become a better version of yourself. Lately SMD is investing heavily in their staff and facilities, I have been unindebted with training courses to improve the way we operate. We have also had a production team meal which was kindly paid for by SMD as a team building exercise.
Any advice for young people who may be interested in engineering?
I personally would always recommend an apprenticeship following my experiences, all the way through my apprenticeship I was earning a good wage while still learning and hopefully this time next year I will have completed a Foundation Degree in electrical engineering. There is some amazing opportunities within the oil, gas and renewable energy sector where you’ll learn a lot more hands on skills than you would being in a classroom.
