Meet Abi Thompson

I started with SMD 13 Years ago and have been a Project Manager for 3 of them, I work mainly on new equipment.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

Whenever I get asked a question like this, I instantly want to start singing “Run the world” by Beyonce!

I do feel we need to see more women in industry, it’s a great industry to be in and well… why should the men have all the fun!

#WomenInProjects! #WomenInEngineering! #WomenInSubsea!

How does SMD nurture female talent?

I started at SMD as a junior Admin Assistant, a few years of hard work have seen me climb the ladder, its not a gender battle, they recognise raw talent and help that grow into full potential.

They paid for my degree and supported me throughout.

How have you found SMD’s support in your role (ie- maternity leave policies/flexible working etc) ?

The flexible working at SMD is great, being a single parent, I have to leave the office at different times but can log on from home and this has never been an issue.

During my time on maternity, we maintained communication and upon my return they happily supporting my breastfeeding journey – WIN!

What is your experience like of working in a traditionally male-dominated industry?

Working in a male dominated environment can be quite intimidating for someone starting out new, however if time has taught me anything, it’s that we are no different, our talent is no different and the majority of people see that. You don’t stick out like a sore thumb, you’re just part of the team.

Do you have any advice for women aspiring to work in subsea robotics/engineering?

If you’re up for the challenge, then this industry is perfect for you.

What are 3 words you’d use to describe SMD?
