SMD have been involved in offshore wind since the very beginning, developing a range of cable burial tools to safely handle and protect inter array and export cables.
Since the first foray into what was then a fledging industry back in 2002, we estimate that our equipment has now been used to bury around 70% of European offshore wind farm cables.
With eight world firsts under our belt we pride ourselves as pioneers in the subsea engineering space. So when a partnership with a customer leads to successful cable protection in one of the first offshore wind farms in the far east, we can’t help but celebrate
Van Oord’s Dig-It machine has been reliably trenching the inter array cables and its big brother Deep Dig-It has trenched the 3 export cables to some remarkable depths in extremely challenging tidal conditions. Working in partnership, SMD and Van Oord have re-configured the machines for operating in Taiwan, using each other’s supply chain expertise and reach spread over three continents.
