NOVEMBER 2025 – SMD ARTEMIS CABLE TRACKER RELEASED TO MARKET ENABLING TRACKING OF CABLES TO 5M

This month, we’re diving deep with SMD Artemis, our groundbreaking cable and pipeline tracking system.

One of our most recent world-firsts, SMD Artemis marks a major leap forward for subsea cable and pipeline detection and surveying, redefining how we position, locate and verify buried assets. Our Insight Manager, Stephen Wilson, explains how this technology is transforming global operations.

WHY WAS SMD ARTEMIS CREATED?

We are committed to solving the biggest problems facing our clients, and SMD Artemis is a direct product of this ethos. When it comes to buried assets, we noticed that operators experience two key challenges. The first is real-time assurance of the required burial positions and depths. The second is the ability to locate cables with little or no power and no means for tone injection, particularly at burial depths greater than 1m. SMD Artemis was developed to tackle this head-on.

HOW DOES SMD ARTEMIS WORK?

This product uses advanced 3D electromagnetic sensors to provide accurate location data in real-time. In passive mode, it reads electromagnetic signals from live or toned cables, enabling a detection range of up to ten metres. In active mode, it generates a controlled electromagnetic field to induce a measurable response in the armour package of the cable. Analysing this induced field across multiple sensor enables SMD Artemis to locate cables with little or no existing signal at a detection range of up to five metres. Having both the Active and Passive operational modes, Artemis can be used on toned, live and non-powered cables, enabling one system to be utilised for accurate asset detection, tracking and burial depth confirmation. This provides operators with a clear, real-time understanding of the cables position during survey, trenching and maintenance operations.

HOW IS SMD ARTEMIS TRANSFORMING SUBSEA OPERATIONS?

As the first system to combine active and passive tracking in a single platform, SMD Artemis delivers exceptional versatility, reliability, and accuracy. As offshore energy and infrastructure networks expand, efficiently locating and assessing subsea cables and pipelines has become increasingly important. Traditional tracking systems are often restricted by interference, depth, a reliance on powered signals and the need for post-processing of data. This is where SMD Artemis differs. Providing consistent, dependable results across a wide range of environments, it enables companies to perform multi-pass burial operations, having confidence in the cable position when lowering the swords, and survey of deeply buried, dead or abandoned cables without the need for power or tone generation.

WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM SMD ARTEMIS?

This is a key asset for all those involved in the burial, survey or repair of subsea cables or pipelines. Seamlessly mounted to a trencher, ROV, or AUV, and effortlessly switched between active and passive mode, it supplies continuous live feedback for efficient and effective operations, proven through extensive offshore testing.

Designed to lead, built by experts, and proven in the field, SMD Artemis isn’t just a tool; it’s the future of subsea cable and pipeline detection. To find out more or discuss integration with your operations, please get in touch.
