Curvetech® – engineered for depth. Trusted for performance.
For more than 20 years, SMD Curvetech® components have helped clients navigate some of the industry’s most demanding subsea operations. Originally engineered to power our ROVs, trenchers and plough systems, these proven subsea components have since evolved into a complete ecosystem of rugged, reliable and fully interchangeable systems that are available as standalone products or as part of a complete SMD vehicle system.
Designed for continuous operation in harsh environments and validated in hyperbaric chambers up to 6,000m depths, every patented component is engineered to perform under extreme subsea pressures.
Five core components underpin the SMD Curvetech® range:
1. Thrusters Maintaining accurate positioning in unpredictable subsea conditions is a constant challenge for ROV and trencher operations. Our HT and HTE thrusters overcome this by using an asymmetric nozzle design to deliver near-equal forward and reverse thrust. Available from 230mm to 750mm, they provide precise manoeuvrability, stability and reliable station-keeping offshore.
2. Motors Continuous subsea operation places significant demands on reliability and performance. That’s why our high-voltage electric and hydraulic motors are designed for 24/7 operation, ranging from 11.5hp to 250hp. Specialist winding techniques reduce operating temperatures, enabling the motors to run cooler for longer during extended offshore deployment.
3. Hydraulic Power Units (HPUs) Supporting multiple subsea functions without compromising on performance is a key operational challenge. So, our HPUs provide an all-in-one hydraulic power solution for propulsion, tooling and trenching operations. Their dual-ended design means two independent systems can operate simultaneously, improving operational flexibility and efficiency.
4. TCUs & Valve Tanks Our TCUs and valve packs control and distribute hydraulic power, offering configurations to support up to 12 functions. Integrated drive electronics and RS485 communication provide real-time diagnostics, while clear covers enable quick visual inspection during operation offshore.
5. Compensators Extreme subsea pressures create constant risk for sensitive vehicle systems. Using a rolling diaphragm mechanism, our compensators maintain internal pressure slightly above ambient to prevent seawater ingress. Built from stainless steel and engineering plastics for high corrosion resistance, they also contain visual inspection windows so operators can effortlessly monitor fluid conditions, preventing damage before it occurs.
The Future of SMD Curvetech® As the subsea industry shifts towards electrified, lower-emission operations, SMD Curvetech is evolving with it.
Proven technologies such as our electric thrusters and high-output electric motors are already supporting the development of next-generation systems, including the QTrencher EV, while also giving clients the opportunity to upgrade and extend the capability of their existing subsea assets.
