SMD Artemis was developed to set a new standard in subsea cable and pipeline tracking and is now deployed worldwide and revolutionising subsea cable operations.
Ongoing refinement, informed by extensive offshore experience, ensure SMD Artemis continues to outperform the next best market solution in terms of depth, capability and accuracy.
Switching seamlessly between the Active and Passive modes of operation, users can accurately locate live, dead or damaged cables and gain real-time assurance of burial depth and positioning, supporting a host of applications.
Find it. Track it. Prove it.
Operating across offshore wind, subsea power, telecoms, and marine construction projects, SMD Artemis delivers against its promise to “Find it. Track it. Prove it.”
This can be seen in an extensive track record of client applications. For example, DEME purchased two SMD Artemis systems in 2025 and has since deployed the system on five projects, supporting with offshore wind operations.
This is just one of over 40 projects which has utilised SMD Artemis since its launch to market in 2019, representing a substantial track record for successful commercial deployment. Ongoing use across different project scopes has provided further validation of system performance in operational environments.
Successful Global Deployment
To date, SMD Artemis has been deployed across four continents, supporting missions in the most challenging subsea conditions. The system has demonstrated reliable performance during demanding burial activities where accurate depth measurement and real-time feedback are critical. With a proven detection range of up to 5m for Artemis Active and 10m for Artemis Passive, it has met all performance expectations.
Clients value SMD Artemis for its real-time data output and continuous burial depth measurements, which enable operators and survey teams to monitor trenching performance during installation and ensure compliance with depth-of-burial requirements during post lay survey.
SMD Artemis also offers ethernet-based communications, alongside its standard serial connection, facilitating straightforward integration with existing vessel networks, vehicles and survey systems. Data outputs can be streamed directly into client survey software, removing the need for additional processing or manual integration. This enables gathered intelligence to be incorporated seamlessly into wider survey datasets, providing a comprehensive view of subsea conditions.
Ongoing Development
Over the next 12-months, a key area of focus is improved trenching capabilities, with a particular investment in burial by means of dual jetting. Through close collaboration with leading subsea contractor DEME, SMD Artemis is set to be the first product to determine the relative cable position (to the subsea vehicle) on both front and aft; therefore making it possible to accurately place the jetting assemblies over the buried cable, significantly reducing the risk of cable damage during deep burial and second pass burial.
A Future-Focused Investment
With proven performance and an extensive track record, SMD Artemis is improving the accuracy and efficiency of subsea operations across numerous industries. To discover more about this market-leading technology, click here, or contact our Business Development Manager, Dr Lindsay Smith.
