February 2026 – Introducing the SMD QTrencher EV

When we first launched the SMD QTrencher® range over 30 years ago, the telecommunications industry was on the cusp of a global surge. Fibre optic networks were expanding rapidly, and reliable submarine cable maintenance capability was critical to enable a resolution to cable downtime.

The QTrencher range (400hp through 600hp models) was engineered for this moment and has continued to deliver ever since. Its core design has remained trusted across global fleets, proving its reliability in some of the most demanding offshore environments. Many of those initial trenchers continue to operate now with loyal and experienced crew extracting maximum value and maximum life from their assets.

Now, the telecommunications market is evolving once again, and the SMD QTrencher range is changing with it.

INTRODUCING THE QTRENCHER EV

We are proud to announce plans to launch electrified QTrenchers.

Ready for purchase later this year, the new SMD QTrencher® EV range has been developed in response to renewed global investment in secure connectivity and data infrastructure. As demand for resilient subsea networks grows, powerful and efficient trenching capability is more important than ever.

The first innovation phase includes the electrification of the QT400, QT500 and QT600, three high-performance vehicles that will deliver maximum jetting and thrust capability for seamless cable maintenance operations.

NEW RANGE, PROVEN TECHNOLOGY

This latest evolution builds on proven foundations.

Established DC power architecture, electric thrusters and electric water pumps, all tried and tested through our market-leading Quantum and Atom EVs, are embedded within the new range.
This proven foundation ensures a low-risk transition for operators while unlocking significant performance gains.

DC power architecture improves jetting performance, enhances swimming efficiency and enables stable operation in higher currents. Faster transit speeds and improved responsiveness further support efficient subsea operations. DC transmission will operate in deep water whereas AC transmission has significant compromises that make it more difficult to go deeper. Our DC transmission will work seamlessly in 3000m water depth for all submarine cable maintenance tasks and will be extended to 6000m water depths for deep water survey operations.

At the same time, reduced mechanical complexity means fewer components, lower maintenance requirements and meaningful operating cost savings. With a comparable footprint and power demand to existing models, the EV range is designed to integrate seamlessly into current maintenance fleets.

JUST THE BEGINNING

This electrification programme is only the beginning.

Future upgrades will extend electrification across the broader QTrencher range, including higher-powered vehicles up to 1600hp. We are also investing in the electrification of key hydraulic components and cable maintenance tools, and e-tooling range.

By evolving both vehicle and tooling in parallel, we are ensuring that operators will maximise the efficiency, reliability and performance benefits of an integrated electric system, from lower maintenance demands to improved control.

Built for the last telecommunications surge, the QT is now engineered for the next.
