Telecommunications cables are the backbone of global connectivity. Buried beneath the seabed, they carry the digital data at the heart of modern life.
In 1984, our pioneering team invented the world’s first simultaneous lay and burial subsea plough, specially designed to install these vital cables safely.
Our MD3 plough range quickly became the industry standard and has since been used to lay approximately 90 percent of the world’s subsea telecom cables.
Fast forward to 2012, we evolved this product into the MD3 XT; a share extension upgrade that enables trenching at 3.3m and secures 3m of genuine product coverage for our clients.
THE VEHICLE OF CHOICE
Our lay and burial ploughs are recognised globally as setting the standard in cable ploughing technology, offering an unrivalled solution for safe and secure lay and burial.
Recently, we partnered with Asean Cableship (ACPL) to bring the MD3 XT to Asia Pacific. As a leading company in the submarine cable industry, ACPL is committed to advancing telecommunication infrastructure for clients across Africa and Asia.
As a representative at ACPL explains: “As part of our commitment to providing robust solutions for our growing client base, we invest in innovative technology that delivers reliable results. The MD3 XT plough does exactly that.
“We first purchased an SMD plough around 20 years ago – this vehicle has stood the test of time and we are delighted to incorporate a second SMD vehicle into our fleet. The company’s 50-year history of operational excellence is evident in the performance and reliability of its technology.
“While the MD3 XT is an SMD legacy product, our vehicle is completely bespoke, expertly tailored to meet our unique operational requirements. We look forward to bolstering our cable-laying capabilities, ensuring efficient, precise, and secure submarine cable installations across diverse seabed conditions.”
Matthew Woodward, our Sales & Business Development Manager, added: “Just as SMD is at the forefront of the underwater technology and services industry, ACPL operates at the heart of twenty-first-century cable system repair and installation.
“Alongside the plough itself which was uniquely modified in partnership with ACPL – we are also providing a full-service package to ensure seamless integration into the company’s existing vessel and optimum operational performance over the long term.
“The MD3 XT offers maximum plough stability alongside minimal cable handling. Taking into account burial depth requirements, ground conditions and operational preferences, it delivers an assured and holistic solution for each subsea project.”
