Manufacture

As a company experienced in ‘systems integration’ and with a wide network of both local and country wide sub-contractors SMD is well placed to carry out prototype device fabrication, assembly and commissioning; leading to the ability to manage and undertake commercial scale production.

SMD entered into a collaboration agreement with Atlantis Resources Corporation (ARC) for the technology integration and manufacture of the AK1000, claimed to be one of the world's largest 'free stream' tidal turbines.

The nacelle and major power train components of this prototype device were fabricated, assembled and commissioned at the SMD facilities in Wallsend, Newcastle; the turbine nacelle was delivered to Invergordon for final assembly of the blades and gravity base.

SMD have applied their experience in subsea control systems and electrical power connections to assist ARC in the design and commissioning of the AK1000 systems. The control cabs were outfitted and commissioned at SMD prior to delivery directly to the EMEC test site in Orkney.
